Gov’t Allocates Ksh.1.75 Billion to Settle Intern Doctors’ Salary Arrears

The government has confirmed that Ksh.1.75 billion is available to address outstanding salary arrears owed to doctors.

This funding will be disbursed by the Ministry of Health, via the Treasury, to county governments as conditional grants to help clear part of the Ksh.3.5 billion owed to doctors under the 2017-2021 collective bargaining agreement (CBA).

According to a commitment letter from the Treasury, these funds will be provided in line with agreements made during the nationwide doctors’ strike, which lasted three months and disrupted services across the country.

The first Ksh.1.75 billion will be made available in the 2024/2025 financial year, with the remaining balance to be released in the subsequent year to fully settle the Ksh.3.5 billion arrears.

Mary Muthoni, the Principal Secretary for Public Health, noted that the Presidential Taskforce on Human Resources is in the final stages of developing a national health human resources policy, a framework the country has not had previously.

“The salary arrears owed to doctors by the counties will be provided as a conditional grant from the national government,” Muthoni explained.
