Chief Government Pathologist Johansen Oduor has conveyed his astonishment at the gruesome killing of 20-year-old university student Rita Waeni.
Rita’s mutilated remains were discovered in a Roysambu apartment last Sunday. Speaking to reporters in Nairobi after conducting Rita’s post-mortem on Friday, Dr. Oduor expressed that, in his extensive forensic career, he had never encountered such a case.
“This incident is unprecedented in my forensic life. I have never come across anything like this before,” stated Dr. Oduor. He noted the precision of the cuts on the skin, resembling those made by a sharp object, while the bone appeared to have been sawed off using what seemed to be a hacksaw.
Dr. Oduor also revealed that the perpetrator attempted to remove Rita’s fingernails to eliminate traces of DNA, often left during struggles between victims and assailants.
“The killer tried to clip off her fingernails to hide evidence, preventing us from obtaining his DNA from the victim,” explained the Chief Pathologist. Despite the damage, he successfully collected samples from some undamaged fingernails for further forensic analysis, hoping to identify the perpetrator through DNA remnants.
Noting the absence of the deceased’s head, Dr. Oduor mentioned, “There was also a desecration of the body, whereby someone cut the femur clean off, separating the legs from the trunk. Although she lost a significant amount of blood, this likely occurred after death.”
