Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has commended Kenyans, particularly Gen Z protesters, for observing the June 25 anniversary peacefully and urged citizens to channel their quest for political change through the ballot in the 2027 General Election.
In a statement issued on Thursday after nationwide commemorations marking two years since the 2024 anti-government demonstrations, Gachagua praised young people for exercising restraint and responding to his earlier appeal to avoid confrontations that could result in injuries or loss of life.

He said June 25 should remain a day of remembrance for the young Kenyans who lost their lives during last year’s protests, describing it as a significant moment in the country’s democratic journey.
“Today, June 25, 2026, was more than just another day. We remembered what happened to our children, and we will never forget,” Gachagua said.
The former Deputy President also thanked Gen Z, parents, traders, and members of the public for prioritizing safety during the anniversary events.
He expressed gratitude to young people for listening to his call to avoid situations that could put their lives at risk.
Gachagua further acknowledged business owners and traders who temporarily closed their premises, saying the move helped protect businesses, neighborhoods, and communities during the commemorations.
He also appreciated police officers and public servants whom he described as patriotic, claiming they shared information with him ahead of the demonstrations, which influenced his advice to Kenyans to remain cautious.
Addressing the youth, Gachagua encouraged them to remain patient, saying that exercising caution should not be mistaken for weakness but viewed as a strategic approach.

He urged Kenyans to register as voters in preparation for the 2027 General Election, insisting that meaningful political change should be achieved through constitutional means.
According to Gachagua, the country’s future will ultimately be determined at the ballot box on August 10, 2027, and he called on citizens to remain safe and participate in the democratic process.
He added that the peaceful nature of the June 25 anniversary reflected Kenyans’ commitment to expressing their views responsibly while looking ahead to the next General Election.
