President Ruto to Tour Busia on Sunday to Counter Opposition Influence

President William Ruto is scheduled to visit Busia on Sunday, which local analysts suggest could be an attempt to counter Raila Odinga’s influence in the county.

The visit, primarily for an interdenominational prayer meeting at Machakus ACK church in Teso Central subcounty, will also include political rallies and the initiation of development projects in the Teso sub-region.

Ruto’s provisional itinerary outlines stops at Malaba Township Primary School, Machakus ACK church, Amoni for the Malaba-Malakisi water and sewerage project commissioning, a rally in Malaba town, and another rally in Ang’urai. The President will then proceed to Kolanya Girls National School to announce a funding program for infrastructural development.

This visit comes less than a week after Raila Odinga’s tour of Busia, during which he faced a hostile reception at two rallies in Malaba and Busia. Ruto aims to sway political dynamics in Busia, traditionally an ODM stronghold, as the county gears up for future elections.

In the 2022 presidential results at the county level, Raila secured a significant victory with 81.68%, while Ruto garnered 17.63%. Ruto’s tour may seek to capitalize on the recent challenges faced by Raila during his visit to present an alternative and win over supporters.

The President, leveraging his position, may also unveil strategic development projects during the visit to appeal to residents. Notable figures expected to receive Ruto include Governor Paul Otuoma, Cabinet Secretary Ababu Namwamba, and other leaders from the region.

Ruto’s previous commitment to initiating development projects across the country, regardless of political affiliations, may play a role in shaping his narrative during this visit.
