The United Alternative Government (UAG) has announced plans to support a single candidate in the forthcoming Ol Kalou parliamentary by-election as part of efforts to consolidate opposition support and enhance its electoral prospects.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, the coalition said the decision followed extensive consultations among its member parties and was aimed at presenting a united front in what it described as a crucial democratic contest.

According to the coalition, the candidate will be selected through independent opinion polls and scientific surveys to identify the aspirant with the strongest chances of winning the seat.
The alliance said the strategy underscores its commitment to unity, democratic principles and evidence-based decision-making, adding that collective interests should take priority over individual political ambitions.
UAG also urged the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), security agencies and other stakeholders to ensure the election is conducted in a peaceful, free and transparent manner.
The coalition cautioned against voter bribery, intimidation, misuse of public resources and any attempts to influence the outcome through state machinery, insisting that residents of Ol Kalou should be allowed to vote freely without interference.
The announcement comes as political parties intensify preparations for the by-election. The Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP), associated with former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, has already nominated former MCA Sammy Ngotho as its candidate.
Meanwhile, Jubilee Party has settled on Wilson Kigwa as its flagbearer after concluding its internal nomination process.
The by-election was triggered by the death of Ol Kalou MP David Kiaraho, who was serving his third term in office on a Jubilee Party ticket. Kiaraho passed away in March while receiving treatment at Nairobi Hospital and was later buried in Tigoni, Limuru, Kiambu County.

Following his death, National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula officially declared the seat vacant through a Gazette Notice.
The IEBC has scheduled the by-election for July 16, setting the stage for a closely watched political contest in the Mt Kenya region.
