A 37-year-old man has died after reportedly falling into a septic tank while conducting drainage work in Matungulu, Machakos County.
Police said the incident occurred on Wednesday, May 13, at Afya Phase One Estate in the Malaa area after the case was reported to authorities.
Officers who visited the scene established that the man, identified as James Kariuki Maina, had been hired earlier in the day to pump out water from a newly constructed septic tank.

Preliminary findings indicate that while operating a generator pump to drain water from the 18-foot-deep concrete tank, he allegedly slipped and fell inside, where he drowned.
Police, together with members of the public, later retrieved the body. No visible physical injuries were observed.
The body was taken to Kangundo Level 4 Hospital Mortuary awaiting postmortem examination after the scene was documented.
In a separate incident in Mbooni East Sub-county, Makueni County, police are investigating a suspected murder after a man’s body was discovered in a dam.
According to police, residents alerted authorities on Wednesday after noticing a decomposing body believed to have been dumped at Kyangamati Dam within a farm in Waia Location.
Officers recovered the body of an unidentified adult male, estimated to be about 45 years old, wrapped in a gunny bag and weighed down with stones in the water.

The body showed signs of decomposition, indicating it had been in the dam for some time.
The scene was processed before the remains were taken to Makueni County Referral Hospital Mortuary for identification and preservation as investigations continue.
