KRA Launches WhatsApp Platform for Filing Tax Returns

The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has introduced a new WhatsApp-based platform designed to make it easier for Kenyans to file their tax returns.

The system streamlines the filing process, cutting the number of steps from eight to just three, with the aim of enhancing efficiency and user experience.

According to KRA Commissioner General Humphrey Wattanga, the solution takes advantage of the widely used messaging app to help taxpayers submit their annual returns while receiving real-time assistance.

KRA noted that the platform will also provide instant support to users who encounter difficulties, helping to reduce congestion and promote timely filing.

The initiative is part of ongoing efforts to digitise tax services, with new features targeting individuals earning employment income. These include pre-filled returns populated with employer PAYE data such as gross earnings, taxable income, and statutory deductions like the Social Health Insurance Fund (SHIF) and Affordable Housing Levy (AHL).

Employers will also benefit from a simplified PAYE filing system aimed at improving accuracy in capturing exemptions and reliefs.

For taxpayers with additional sources of income, the platform offers pre-filled annual returns with key details and withholding tax information already included.

KRA has further upgraded its taxpayer dashboard to enhance visibility of transactions, including invoices, imports, and exports, while allowing greater flexibility in claiming eligible business expenses.
