At least seven people were killed after a small aircraft crashed while attempting an emergency landing in central Mexico on Monday, authorities said.
Mexico State Civil Protection Coordinator Adrián Hernández said the accident occurred in San Mateo Atenco, an industrial area about five kilometres from Toluca Airport and roughly 50 kilometres west of Mexico City. The plane had departed from Acapulco along the Pacific coast.

According to Hernández, the private jet was carrying eight passengers and two crew members, but only seven bodies had been recovered several hours after the crash.
Preliminary reports indicate the aircraft tried to land on a football pitch before striking the metal roof of a nearby business, triggering a large fire.
Investigations into the cause of the crash are ongoing.
San Mateo Atenco Mayor Ana Muñiz told Milenio Television that the fire led to the evacuation of about 130 people from the surrounding area.
