Caught up in the commotion, several Butere Girls students scrambled back to their bus, with some falling in the rush. Cries of “Funga dirisha, funga dirisha” and “Wanatupiga teargas kwa nini?” were heard from the distressed students.

The group was set to stage the controversial play “Echoes of War,” reportedly written by former Kakamega Senator Cleophas Malala, who also serves as the director. However, the students refused to perform, demanding Malala’s release from police custody.

The incident occurred at Kirobon Girls High School in Rongai subcounty, Nakuru, where the Kenya Schools and Colleges National Drama and Film Festival is currently underway.

Tensions had already escalated the previous night when police dispersed crowds gathered outside the school amid a standoff involving Malala.

This year’s festival, themed “Leveraging Technology to Nurture Talent While Inculcating Value for Social Prosperity,” runs from April 7 to 15.

The 63rd edition began on a high note at Melvin Jones International School, where Principal Secretary for Basic Education Julius Bitok officiated the opening ceremony, urging youth to find ways to monetise their creative talents.
