MPs Pass Controversial Finance Bill 2024

Members of parliament (MPs) approved the controversial Finance Bill 2024 on Tuesday, June 25, 2024, and have sent it to President William Ruto for his signature.

The bill garnered 195 votes in favor, with 106 opposing it and three votes being invalidated, following a swift two-hour debate at the National Assembly.

The passage of the bill comes amidst widespread protests across Nairobi and other cities under the banner of #RejectFinanceBill and #OccupyParliament. Activists used social media to organize these demonstrations, urging MPs to reject the legislation due to contentious taxation provisions.

Earlier on June 20, 2024, the bill had advanced during its second reading in parliament, with 204 MPs voting in favor and 115 against it.

The ongoing protests prompted concerns about activist safety, with reports of abductions condemned by organizations like the Kenya Human Rights Commission and the Law Society of Kenya.

LSK President Faith Odhiambo confirmed the release of several abducted individuals, including Ernest Nyerere, Nadia Nthia, and Shadrack Kiprono, linked to these events.
