Youth Hold Gen Z Memorial Service at Mombasa Church

Dozens of young people gathered at ACK Memorial Church in Mombasa on Thursday to honour those who lost their lives during the 2024 Gen Z protests against the Finance Bill.

Church leaders permitted the memorial event, allowing attendees to come together in remembrance of the victims. Many participants wore black clothing and Kenyan-flag bandanas as a symbol of solidarity and tribute.

Security was tight around the venue, with a strong police presence stationed outside the church. Coast Regional Police Commander Ali Nuno was also present during the gathering.

Earlier in the week, local authorities warned against what they described as unauthorized protests, arguing that organisers had not provided the required legal notification. However, event organisers disputed the claims, insisting they had fulfilled all legal obligations and submitted the necessary notices.

Participants emphasized that the memorial would remain peaceful, stating that their purpose was to honour the 62 people who died during the 2024 demonstrations as well as those who lost their lives during subsequent commemorative events.

Mombasa recorded three deaths linked to the protests last year.

Activist Zedekia Adika said organisers had followed the proper legal procedures in planning the memorial activities.

Meanwhile, security was heightened across Mombasa, with police officers deployed along major roads including Digo Road, Moi Avenue, Jomo Kenyatta Avenue and Nkrumah Road to maintain order and monitor the situation.
