Drama unfolded at the burial of marathoner Kelvin Kiptum when an unidentified woman interrupted President William Ruto’s speech.
The interruption occurred while President Ruto was addressing the gathering, prompting him to pause and intervene.
In a video of the incident, the woman, whose identity remains unknown, appeared to be attempting to approach the President before being restrained by security personnel and escorted away.
President Ruto, in an effort to defuse the situation, urged the officers to allow the woman to remain seated, pointing to a spot where he wanted her to sit.
(“Wachana na yeye, wacha tu aketi hapa, pelekeni yeye aketi hapa, keti hapo”) “Leave her alone, let her sit here, take her to sit here,” the President instructed, gesturing towards a designated area.
However, the woman resisted the officers’ attempts to guide her, prompting additional security personnel to intervene and escort her behind the tent.
The motive behind the interruption remains unclear, and details of what transpired afterward are unknown.
Following the brief disturbance, President Ruto resumed his speech, praising Kiptum as a determined and resilient individual.
The President highlighted Kiptum’s humble beginnings and his unwavering commitment to success despite facing numerous challenges.
Ruto encouraged Kenyan athletes preparing for the upcoming Paris Olympics to honor Kiptum’s legacy by giving their best performance, emphasizing that the event would serve as a tribute to the late marathoner.
Kiptum tragically lost his life in a road accident earlier this month, along with his coach, Gervais Hakizimana, who was laid to rest in Rwanda on Wednesday.
