The City of Tshwane in South Africa temporarily cut off electricity to Nigeria’s High Commission after it failed to pay outstanding municipal utility bills, Mayor Nasiphi Moya has confirmed.
In a statement released on Monday, Mayor Moya said the decision was taken after the diplomatic mission did not settle debts owed to the city for services provided.
“We have disconnected electricity at the High Commission of the Federal Republic of Nigeria due to unpaid utility bills,” Moya said.
Later in the day, the mayor announced that the Nigerian High Commission had paid the outstanding amount.
She thanked the mission for settling the debt and confirmed that electricity supply would be restored.
By Monday evening, Nigeria’s High Commission in Pretoria had not released any official comment on the incident.
