Big Win for Security as Police Get 95 New Cars

The National Police Service (NPS) has received a major boost to its operational capacity following the flag-off of 95 new vehicles under Phase VII of the Motor Vehicle Leasing Programme.

The handover ceremony was held on Thursday at the Isuzu East Africa offices and was officiated by the Deputy Inspector General of the Administration Police Service (APS), Mr Gilbert Masengeli, on behalf of Inspector General of Police Mr Douglas Kanja.

The vehicles form part of a total of 591 units scheduled for delivery under Phase VII of the programme, which is anchored at the National Treasury and has played a key role in enhancing police mobility and effectiveness across the country.

Speaking during the event, DIG Masengeli said the Motor Vehicle Leasing Programme, which was initiated in 2013, has significantly improved police response times to crime incidents and emergencies.

He noted that enhanced mobility has enabled officers to reach scenes faster, contain situations more efficiently and strengthen public safety.

He added that increased mobile patrols and surveillance made possible by the programme have contributed to a reduction in crime rates, while also allowing the Service to maintain a modern, well-equipped fleet without placing undue strain on public finances.

“The leasing framework has ensured prudent financial management, sustainability and operational readiness, while enabling the National Police Service to effectively discharge its constitutional mandate of protecting life and property and maintaining law and order,” said DIG Masengeli.

He expressed appreciation to the National Government for its continued support and for adopting the motor vehicle leasing model, terming it a visionary approach to strengthening the security sector.

He also commended Isuzu East Africa for its partnership and timely delivery of the vehicles.

The Principal Administrative Secretary at the National Treasury, Mr Samson Wangusi, underscored the programme’s value in enhancing security operations while ensuring value for money in the utilisation of public resources.

On her part, Isuzu East Africa Managing Director Ms Rita Kavashe said the leasing programme had driven mutual growth among stakeholders. She revealed that the initiative had prompted the company to decentralise vehicle maintenance services from Nairobi to 75 locations across the country, spurring regional economic activity and creating employment opportunities.

DIG Masengeli was accompanied by several senior officers, including the Principal Deputy to the DIG-KPS, Mr Patrick Tito, SAIG; Director of Logistics, APS, Mr Wambua Kisyungu, SAIG; Director of Administration, Planning and Finance, Mr Richard Lesasuiyan, AIG; and Director of Logistics, DCI, Ms Janet Shako, AIG, among others.

Also in attendance were senior officials from Isuzu East Africa, including Executive Deputy Managing Director and Board Member Mr Isao Wada, Leasing and Fleet Operations Manager Mr Rodgers Ogechi, Director of Sales and Marketing Mr Wanjohi Kangangi, and Communications Manager Mr Duncan Muhindi.

Representatives from partner institutions, including Rentco Africa Group CEO and Founder Mr Robert Nyasimi and Equity Bank General Manager Ms Lucy Ndururi, also graced the event.

The flag-off marked yet another milestone in the Government’s ongoing efforts to strengthen the National Police Service and enhance security across the country.
