Babu Owino Represents 73 Informal Sector Workers at Milimani Court

Embakasi East MP Babu Owino on Friday appeared at the Milimani Law Courts where he represented a total of 73 individuals drawn from Kenya’s informal transport and trading sectors.

Those represented included matatu drivers, bodaboda riders, online drivers, and hawkers—groups Owino described as often unheard despite forming the backbone of the country’s daily economy.

On a post shared on his official Facebook page, Owino said his appearance was driven by a commitment to stand with ordinary Kenyans who struggle to earn an honest living in a system that frequently overlooks their challenges.

“I stood where many voices are usually unheard,” he said, noting that his role went beyond legal defence to safeguarding dignity and hope for people whose livelihoods are constantly under pressure.

Owino emphasized that the cases reflected broader social and economic struggles facing workers in the informal sector, many of whom lack consistent legal protection and representation.

“In those courtrooms, I was not just defending cases; I was defending dignity, survival, and hope,” he stated, adding that his presence gave the affected individuals confidence that someone believed in them and was willing to stand firmly by their side.

The legislator, who is also a trained lawyer, has in the past positioned himself as an advocate for grassroots communities, particularly youth and informal workers navigating legal and economic challenges in urban areas.
