According to Athi River chief Cecilia Musyoki, residents raised the alarm after spotting the man with the stolen item, drawing neighbours who descended on him. Despite being subdued, he allegedly refused to surrender the battery, further provoking the crowd.
Police officers on patrol rescued him from the mob, which had threatened to lynch him, and rushed him to hospital where he is currently under guard.
The attack comes just three days after a woman was killed by thugs in the nearby Site estate, about two kilometres away. The victim, who was riding on a motorcycle, died instantly while the boda boda rider sustained serious injuries and is receiving treatment in ICU.
