Nyeri Activist Attempts 72-Hour Tree-Hug to Break World Record

Environmental activist Truphena Muthoni, 22, has launched an extraordinary bid to set a new Guinness World Record by continuously hugging a tree for 72 hours. This demanding challenge, taking place outside Governor Kahiga Mutahi’s office, is aimed at highlighting the urgent need for global climate action.

Muthoni is attempting to surpass her own previous record of 48 hours, which she achieved earlier this year at Nairobi’s Michuki Memorial Park.

The Endurance Challenge

The rules for the feat are strict: Muthoni must maintain unbroken physical contact with the tree for the entire three-day period, without consuming any food or water, testing her limits of mental and physical endurance. While she can shift her position and move around the tree, the embrace must remain constant.

By Tuesday afternoon, Muthoni had successfully completed the first 24 hours of her challenge, drawing significant public attention. Fellow environmentalists are supporting her with a rotating playlist of music to maintain her morale and keep the atmosphere lively throughout the long hours.

Nyeri Governor Kahiga Mutahi and his deputy, Kinaniri Waroe, attended the site, expressing pride in the young activist’s commitment. Governor Kahiga presided over the Monday countdown, remarking that Muthoni was “once again making Nyeri county proud” with her ambitious attempt.

The county leadership views the endeavor as a powerful example of grassroots environmental activism.

Muthoni’s previous 48-hour record earned her widespread acclaim, including praise from Kenya’s Permanent Representative to UNEP and UNON, Ababu Namwamba, who celebrated her as a “consequential champion for climate action” and sustainability.

Her bold actions have also drawn comparisons to the late Nobel Laureate Wangari Maathai, positioning Muthoni as part of a new generation inspired by Maathai’s pioneering work in conservation.

Regardless of whether she secures the new record, supporters believe Muthoni’s ongoing campaign has already succeeded in stirring national dialogue about environmental stewardship, resilience, and the pivotal role of youth leadership in climate advocacy.
