Two protesters were shot dead and at least eight others injured in Matuu, Machakos County, on Wednesday during demonstrations marking one year since Kenya’s mass anti-government protests, according to a local hospital official speaking to AFP.
“One victim had sustained abdominal gunshot wounds and died due to severe bleeding. We were alerted about another shooting victim at a different hospital, but by the time we got there, they had already passed away,” said Julius Makau, a hospital administrator in Matuu.
It remains unclear exactly how the two victims were shot, though Nation newspaper reported that police had fired live ammunition.
The demonstrations were held to commemorate last year’s nationwide protests over economic issues, during which at least 60 people were killed by security forces.
In Nairobi, AFP reporters witnessed protesters in running confrontations with police, who mostly used tear gas and rubber bullets to disperse crowds.
Similar protests were reported in several other towns and cities throughout Kenya.
Makau confirmed that his facility treated six people with gunshot injuries and three others with different wounds. One of the gunshot victims died, one was in critical condition, and the rest were stable.
