The suspect was apprehended by his uncle, who handed him over to officers at Lokichogio Police Station. Authorities say the firearm used in the attack is yet to be recovered, and investigations are ongoing.

Police noted that many herders in the region are minors, some as young as ten, and often carry weapons while tending livestock.

Cattle Rustling Arrests in Nakuru

Meanwhile, in Njoro, Nakuru County, police arrested seven suspects linked to a murder and cattle theft incident. The men were found with 20 stolen cows that had been reported missing from Ndeffo village on October 6, 2025.

Officers recovered the livestock in Teret village, Mauche, along with two bows and a sword believed to have been used in the attack that left one man dead. The suspects remain in custody awaiting arraignment on October 13, 2025.

Ongoing Anti-Banditry Operation

The Lokichogio area is part of Operation Maliza Uhalifu, a government security campaign targeting banditry and illegal firearms in Turkana, West Pokot, Baringo, Samburu, Marsabit, Meru, and Isiolo counties.

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen said the government’s long-term plan is to combine security operations with community empowerment through sustainable development projects.

He revealed that the ministry will roll out subsidized agricultural inputs and extension services to promote farming as an alternative livelihood and curb reliance on cattle rustling.

Murkomen also ordered the vetting of all National Police Reservists (NPRs) to strengthen accountability and directed that NPR officers be placed under the direct command of local police station commanders (OCSs).

“We are not only targeting the criminals but the entire chain sustaining cattle rustling,” Murkomen said, reaffirming the government’s commitment to restoring lasting peace and security in Kenya’s northern frontier.
