Moses Kuria Declares 2027 Nairobi Governor Bid

Former Trade Cabinet Secretary and ex-economic advisor to President William Ruto, Moses Kuria, has formally announced his intention to contest the Nairobi gubernatorial seat in the 2027 General Election.

In a statement shared on his X account on Monday, October 12, 2025, Kuria said he was moved by President Ruto’s recent remarks expressing disappointment over Nairobi’s deteriorating state.

Kuria said the president’s concerns about poor sanitation, mismanagement, and unchecked garbage inspired him to take action and offer leadership to restore the capital’s glory.

“Dear President William Ruto, your words touched my heart. As Baba Raila Odinga has told me many times, Nairobi cannot remain the city of filth and incompetence. I have heard your call. I will run for governor in 2027 to fix Nairobi,” Kuria stated.

President Ruto, during a meeting with Nairobi MPs and Governor Johnson Sakaja, had underscored the need for coordinated efforts to clean up and modernize the city, noting that his administration was working with the private sector on a waste management plan.

“We have agreed on a transformation plan for Nairobi, since it represents the image of our country. We are finalizing a partnership with private investors to clean up all estates. The city cannot continue like this,” Ruto said.

Kuria’s announcement follows growing public frustration over poor service delivery, mounting garbage, and clogged drainage across Nairobi neighborhoods.

He promised that if elected, he would restore efficiency, order, and pride in Nairobi’s administration and make the city cleaner and better managed.

Kuria’s declaration has triggered mixed reactions online — with supporters applauding his boldness and critics questioning his political motives and timing.

As Nairobi politics heat up, all eyes are now on whether Kuria’s bid will receive backing from President Ruto’s ruling coalition ahead of the 2027 polls.
