Wiper Party leader Stephen Kalonzo Musyoka has called on President William Ruto to clarify the purpose of Jubaland armed forces operating within Kenya’s Mandera County.
Kalonzo expressed concern that the presence of these troops is causing fear among locals, especially after reports that they have taken over a primary school, disrupting education in the area.
Speaking in Tseikuru on Saturday, Kalonzo urged President Ruto to restore order by removing the foreign forces from Kenyan soil.
“The Somali army is stationed in Mandera. They claim we shouldn’t be worried and say they have consulted our leaders,” he said.
The deployment of these forces in Northern Kenya has alarmed residents, but Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen sought to calm fears of instability.
At a previous event, CS Murkomen reassured Mandera residents, saying Kenya faces no threat from Somalia or regional Somali forces; the only danger is from the Al Shabaab militia.
His comments responded to opposition leaders demanding government action on allegations concerning the Jubaland forces’ presence in Mandera.
Additionally, Democracy for the Citizens Party leader Rigathi Gachagua and former Chief Justice David Maraga criticized politicians for their “deafening silence” on the issue.
