Teachers from 35 Counties Trained in AI to Enhance STEM Learning

A total of 170 secondary school teachers from 35 counties, including regions like Nakuru, Mandera, Tana River, and Wajir, have been trained in Artificial Intelligence (AI) through the Experience AI programme — a national initiative launched six months ago by Young Scientists Kenya (YSK) in partnership with the Raspberry Pi Foundation and supported by the Ministry of Education, the Government of Ireland, and Google.org.

This AI literacy programme is designed to equip teachers with the tools and confidence to incorporate AI concepts into their classrooms, ultimately reaching an estimated 3,400 students across Kenya. The training aims to prepare young Kenyans for the demands of the Fourth Industrial Revolution by integrating cutting-edge technology into education.

The achievement comes ahead of the 8th annual YSK National Science and Technology Exhibition, set for August 5–9, 2025, in Nairobi, under the theme “Using STEM to Drive Towards a Sustainable Future.” The event will showcase projects from over 250 students in four categories: Technology; Social and Behavioural Sciences; Biological and Ecological Sciences; and Chemical, Physical and Mathematical Sciences. Over 3,000 people—including students, educators, parents, policymakers, and industry leaders—are expected to attend. Top participants will receive university scholarships and educational trips to Ireland.

Since its inception in 2018, YSK has impacted over 250,000 students from more than 850 schools in all 47 counties, offering platforms that nurture creativity, scientific exploration, and entrepreneurship among youth.

Dr. Victor Mwongera, YSK National Director, emphasized the importance of the training: “Empowering teachers with practical AI skills makes them central to fostering digital literacy in schools.”

The Experience AI programme, developed by the Raspberry Pi Foundation in collaboration with Google DeepMind, includes free learning materials and teacher training to help educators simplify digital concepts, promote computational thinking, and seamlessly include AI tools in lesson planning.

Ambassador Caitriona Ingoldsby of Ireland reiterated her country’s commitment to inclusive STEM education in Kenya, particularly for marginalized learners in remote areas, special needs institutions, and refugee settings.

As Kenya strengthens its digital workforce, YSK’s approach of supporting both teachers and students is positioning the country for inclusive innovation, sustainable development, and increased global competitiveness.
