X is a U.S.-based microblogging and social networking platform and ranks among the most-visited websites globally. It allows users to share short text posts, photos, and videos—popularly referred to as tweets—as well as engage with other users’ content.

Beyond posting, the platform offers features such as direct messaging, voice and video calls, bookmarks, lists, communities, Grok chatbot integration, job search tools, and live audio discussions through X Spaces. Users can also participate in fact-checking efforts by rating context added via the Community Notes feature.

Originally launched as twttr in March 2006 by Jack Dorsey, Noah Glass, Biz Stone, and Evan Williams, the platform officially went live in July 2006 before being renamed Twitter later that year.

The service expanded rapidly, and by 2012, it had surpassed 100 million users generating about 340 million tweets daily. Twitter, Inc. was headquartered in San Francisco, California, with more than 25 offices worldwide.

Elon Musk finalized the acquisition of Twitter in October 2022 and served as CEO until June 2023, when Linda Yaccarino took over. The platform was rebranded to X on July 23, 2023, and its web address changed from twitter.com to x.com on May 17, 2024.

Yaccarino stepped down from her role on July 9, 2025.
