Authorities said the recovery followed a tip-off from a member of the public who reported seeing a body floating in the dam. Officers responded, visited the scene, verified the report, and proceeded to retrieve the body.

The deceased was later positively identified by a close family member. The body was taken to Kangundo Level 4 Hospital mortuary, where it is being held pending a postmortem to determine the cause of death. Police noted that investigations into the incident are ongoing.

The Machakos recovery occurred just hours after another drowning incident was reported at Lake Naivasha in Nakuru County.

In a statement, the Kenya Red Cross Society said it was responding to a separate drowning incident involving fishermen at Lake Naivasha, where four people were feared to have drowned. By Saturday, one body had been recovered, while search and rescue efforts for the remaining victims were still underway.

The agency added that its response teams were deployed immediately after receiving a distress call. Authorities have once again urged lake users to adhere to safety precautions, noting that drowning incidents have been reported at Lake Naivasha in the past.
