Africa Mourns as Legendary Amboseli Super Tusker Craig Dies at 54

Amboseli National Park and the global wildlife community are in mourning following the death of Craig, one of Africa’s most celebrated super tuskers, who passed away on Saturday at 54 years old.

Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) hailed Craig as a “gentle giant and a living monument to Africa’s natural heritage,” noting that his passing marks the loss of one of the last elephants with tusks weighing over 45 kilograms each.

Born in January 1972 to the famed matriarch Cassandra of the CB family, Craig became a symbol of Amboseli and an ambassador for elephant conservation worldwide.

Super tuskers are extremely rare, making Craig’s longevity and iconic status all the more remarkable.

“Early this morning, Amboseli National Park, Kenya, and indeed the world lost a true icon,” KWS said.

Craig was admired not only for his enormous tusks but also for his calm and dignified demeanor. Rangers, researchers, and visitors often noted his gentle nature, frequently allowing tourists to photograph him peacefully, which made him one of the most documented elephants globally.

He also played a key role in ensuring the survival of his species, fathering several calves and passing on his impressive genetics to future generations of Amboseli elephants.

In 2021, Craig was formally adopted by East African Breweries Limited (EABL) under the Tusker brand, highlighting his international recognition and iconic status.

KWS credited Craig’s long life to decades of dedicated conservation work, including continuous monitoring, anti-poaching measures, habitat protection, and strong collaboration with local communities and conservation partners.

“His survival to such an advanced age was possible thanks to years of committed protection by Kenya Wildlife Service in partnership with conservation groups and local communities,” the agency said.

Craig’s death closes a remarkable chapter in Amboseli’s history, but his legacy will continue to inspire elephant conservation across Africa.
