Big Plans as UDA Holds First NEC Meeting of 2026

The ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party has held its first National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting of 2026, setting out key organisational and political priorities for the year, with particular emphasis on grassroots elections and upcoming by-elections.

The meeting took place on Friday at the party’s headquarters and was co-chaired by Second Deputy Party Leader and Lamu Governor Issa Timamy alongside Secretary General Senator Hassan Omar Hassan.

Senior party officials and elected leaders attended to review preparations for internal party processes and future electoral engagements.

Top on the agenda were the grassroots elections scheduled for January 10, 2026, to be conducted in 20 counties. The NEC assessed logistical, administrative and mobilisation plans to ensure the exercise is orderly, transparent and credible.

National Elections Board (NEB) Chairperson Anthony Mwaura briefed the committee on the state of readiness, outlining steps taken to guarantee inclusivity, credibility and compliance with the party’s constitution and electoral rules.

Additional updates were given by the Directorate of Elections through Deputy Executive Director Higgins Mbugua.

In a party statement, Mbugua said substantial progress had been made in voter registration ahead of the grassroots polls, adding that systems were in place to deliver a free, fair and inclusive process across the counties.

The NEC also evaluated progress in counties selected for the elections, stressing the need to strengthen grassroots structures as a core pillar of the party’s long-term political strategy.

The meeting was attended by several senior leaders, including Senate Majority Leader Aaron Cheruiyot, Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru, who chairs the UDA Governors Caucus, National Treasurer Japheth Nyakundi, National Organising Secretary Vincent Kawaya and Executive Director Nicodemus Bore.

In addition to internal elections, the committee discussed by-elections slated for February 26, 2026. Members expressed optimism about the party’s performance, citing expanding grassroots support and growing organisational strength across the country.

Party leaders emphasised unity, discipline and respect for democratic values as UDA prepares for a busy electoral period. They noted that strong grassroots structures and credible internal processes are essential to strengthening the party’s national standing and future electoral success.

Officials urged members and supporters to actively participate in the forthcoming exercises as the party positions itself for sustained political engagement and representation.
