Residents in Makutano, Mwea sub-county, Embu County, were left in shock on Saturday after discovering the carcasses of 31 donkeys and several shallow graves at a neighbor’s homestead.

Josphat Maina and Milka, local residents, revealed that the owner of the homestead, Boniface Muli, had been operating an illegal slaughterhouse. Mwea sub-county public health officer Racheal Nyambura Njoroge confirmed the discovery of donkey heads, carcasses, and marked graves at the site.

“We were shocked to find donkey heads, several carcasses, and graves in this homestead. We believe the perpetrators were planning to move the bodies before police arrived,” Nyambura said.
She added that the carcasses would be disposed of in line with health and safety guidelines.
Residents expressed anger and concern, fearing they may have unknowingly consumed donkey meat. “We demand action against the suspect, who we believe has been collaborating with outsiders to steal our livestock and sell them in nearby towns,” Maina stated.
