The two academics assumed their new roles without delay. Prof. Midamba expressed his confidence in their leadership, stating, “I have the honor to announce the new Acting Vice Chancellor of Moi University: Prof. Kiplagat Kotut,” and also welcomed Prof. Ongeti to his new position.
Prof. Kotut’s appointment comes as a result of the departure of Prof. Isaac Kosgey, who has been placed on a compulsory eight-month leave. Additionally, the Head of Finance and Legal Affairs has been suspended, highlighting ongoing challenges within the institution.
In his remarks, Prof. Midamba committed to addressing the crisis at Moi University, which has been grappling with financial mismanagement and strike actions that have frustrated both students and parents. He expressed the board’s dedication to revitalizing the university, emphasizing plans to implement significant reforms within the next 100 days.
“We recently had a productive meeting with the unions, where we agreed on the need to collaborate on solutions to the issues facing the university. Our mission is to restore Moi University to its former glory as a world-class institution of teaching, research, and innovation,” he stated. “We have outlined clear milestones, and we are determined to see them through in the coming weeks and months.”
This leadership change follows a series of challenges at the university, including the dismissal of the previous board and ongoing investigations into mismanagement. The new board, which includes Prof. Ronald Wasike, Dr. Mercy Nyambura Kanyara, Dr. Edward Sambili, and Anne Weceke Makori, is tasked with steering the institution through its current turmoil.
The appointment also follows a pledge from the Cabinet Secretary for Education, who had vowed in December to address the mismanagement at Moi University. CS Ogamba had announced that investigations were underway, with actions planned against those found guilty of mismanagement. “We are committed to ensuring that our universities operate transparently and maintain the integrity of their academic offerings,” he said at the time.
The leadership changes at Moi University are seen as a critical step in addressing the challenges facing the institution, with stakeholders hopeful for a swift resolution to the ongoing crisis.
