President William Ruto has rewarded environmental activist Truphena Muthoni with a fully funded holiday following her highly publicised campaign in which she spent 72 consecutive hours hugging an indigenous tree to spotlight environmental conservation and climate change.
The holiday, sponsored by the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) and the Kenya Tourism Board (KTB), will also cover members of Muthoni’s team. The recognition was announced during her meeting with the President at State House.

Alongside the sponsored trip, President Ruto awarded Muthoni the Head of State Commendation (HSC) Medal in recognition of her bravery, perseverance and dedication to environmental advocacy.
Describing her as a model young Kenyan, the President said her commitment and determination reflect the best of the nation’s values.
Ruto further appointed Muthoni as an ambassador for the government’s 15 Billion Tree Planting Campaign, a flagship initiative aimed at restoring forest cover and boosting Kenya’s resilience to climate change.

Additional support will see the Ministry of Environment, Climate Change and Forestry facilitate Muthoni’s travel to Brazil to gain international exposure to conservation programmes and environmental leadership initiatives.

The President said recognising young environmental champions through such incentives is vital to inspiring collective action and rallying public support towards achieving Kenya’s target of planting 15 billion trees by 2032.
Muthoni welcomed the honour, noting that the support would enhance her advocacy efforts and motivate more Kenyans, particularly the youth, to engage actively in environmental conservation and climate action.
