President William Ruto has nominated Hanna Wendot Cheptumo, the widow of the late Baringo Senator William Cheptumo, for a Cabinet Secretary role.
In an announcement made by Chief of Staff and Head of Public Service Felix Koskei, Ruto proposed Wendot for the position of Cabinet Secretary in the Ministry of Gender, Culture, the Arts, and Heritage. If approved by Parliament, she will join the Cabinet as a key member of the country’s highest policy-making body.
Additionally, Mbeere North MP Geoffrey Ruku has been nominated for the Ministry of Public Service, Human Capital Development, and Special Programmes, where he would replace Justin Muturi, pending parliamentary approval.
Koskei stated that the President had congratulated the nominees and wished them well as they go through the parliamentary approval process in line with constitutional requirements.
The Ministry of Gender has been without a Cabinet Secretary since August 2024, when the National Assembly Committee on Appointments rejected the nomination of Stella Soi Lang’at. The Committee, whose report was later adopted by the full House, stated that Lang’at was unfit for the role as she could not demonstrate sufficient knowledge of the key issues in the ministry, including administrative and technical matters. The Committee also noted that she failed to respond adequately to questions during the approval hearings.
The Ministry is seen as strategically important due to its responsibility for overseeing critical national policies and services.
