The 40-year-old striker made history by becoming the oldest player to score against Germany, finally ending a personal losing streak that had seen him beaten in all five previous encounters with the team. It was also Portugal’s first win over Germany since 2000.
Germany controlled the opening half but failed to score, largely due to an outstanding performance by Portugal goalkeeper Diogo Costa. Costa denied Leon Goretzka early on and pulled off multiple key saves, including close-range efforts from Nick Woltemade and another shot from Goretzka.
Germany eventually broke the deadlock in the 48th minute when Florian Wirtz scored with a header off a perfectly placed pass from Joshua Kimmich.
Portugal responded strongly in the second half, leveling in the 63rd minute through substitute Francisco Conceição. Just five minutes later, Ronaldo struck his 137th international goal to seal the comeback.
Portugal will now face the winner of the Spain vs France semifinal in the final.
