The constituency is represented by MP Mwengi Mutuse, the youthful lawmaker who spearheaded the impeachment motion that led to Gachagua’s removal from office. This marks Gachagua’s first visit to Mutuse’s political turf since his ouster.
Ahead of the visit, Mutuse called on the two leaders to maintain decorum during their engagements, cautioning against turning the rallies into forums for political attacks. Speaking at an empowerment event in Kitui East, Mutuse urged mutual respect and emphasized that leaders should avoid divisive rhetoric.
The visit is widely seen as part of a broader political realignment aimed at challenging President William Ruto’s influence in the region. Ruto has been collaborating closely with Mutuse and Labour CS Alfred Mutua, a long-time rival of Kalonzo in Ukambani politics.

The showdown follows a high-profile meeting at Kalonzo’s Tseikuru home on May 29, where Gachagua joined other opposition figures in a show of unity. The gathering underscored growing efforts by opposition leaders to consolidate their regional bases ahead of the 2027 general election.

During a rally in Matuu, Machakos, Gachagua endorsed Kalonzo as Ukambani’s political leader and urged residents to vote exclusively for Wiper candidates to boost Kalonzo’s leverage in opposition negotiations.
Gachagua and Kalonzo are now emerging as key pillars in a budding opposition alliance that includes leaders like DAP-K’s Eugene Wamalwa, aiming to present a united challenge to Ruto’s administration in the next polls.
