Revival Of Nzoia Sugar Company Brings Relief To 67,000 Farmers

The Nzoia Sugar Company factory has resumed its operations, providing relief to more than 67,000 sugarcane farmers who have faced challenges due to its prolonged shutdown. The revival of this once influential milling plant follows a government directive and a period of inactivity caused by a shortage of cane.

Acknowledging the hardships faced by factory workers during the shutdown, Bungoma Governor Kenneth Lusaka highlighted the significance of the reopening ceremony. The resurgence of the factory is anticipated to stimulate the local economy, bringing much-needed vitality and alleviating the financial strain on farmers who have gone without pay for 21 months.

Governor Lusaka called for united efforts to stabilize the factory, urging the political class to prioritize finding lasting solutions for cane farmers by setting aside their differences. County leaders also urged the management to address the Ksh.1.6 billion debt and actively contribute to the company’s revival.

Expressing empathy for the workers who endured 21 months without a salary, Governor Lusaka said, “It’s a very difficult situation, and we thank you for your resilience. We hope that all these efforts will succeed.” Additionally, Kanduyi MP John Makali emphasized the importance of effective management and called for an overhaul if the current leadership proves inadequate.
