Four individuals who visited marathoner Kelvin Kiptum’s residence shortly before his demise have clarified the purpose of their visit to his home in Elgeyo Marakwet.
Following a summons, they were interrogated at the Directorate of Criminal Investigations office in Kaptagat on Wednesday morning.
Their explanation indicated that they had gone to discuss a Sh45 million contract Kiptum had signed with a Chinese firm.
Law enforcement confirmed that there was no connection between these individuals and the accident that claimed Kiptum’s life and that of his coach.
According to these individuals, Kiptum had decided to terminate the contract and reimburse the Chinese company. They conveyed that the company preferred an amicable resolution rather than engaging in a legal dispute, hence sending them to negotiate.
The contract involved the supply of sports equipment for Kiptum’s use in the Chicago marathon, but it is alleged that Kiptum intended to utilize a different brand instead of the agreed-upon Chinese brand.
Elgeyo Marakwet County’s Criminal Investigations Officer, Joshua Chelal, stated that based on the initial explanation, these individuals are currently not considered suspects in the accident investigation.
He added that if necessary, they would be required to return for further questioning on Friday.
These individuals were familiar to some family members and had met with Kiptum to discuss the matter.
Kiptum’s father, Samson Cheruiyot, had raised concerns about the visit of four unidentified individuals to their home in Chepsamo village, demanding thorough investigation due to their lack of proper introduction.
The vehicle used by these individuals was impounded at Kaptagat Police Station, and they were positively identified by Cheruiyot.
Preparations for Kiptum’s burial have commenced, with plans for his interment scheduled for Saturday, February 24th, at his home.
Authorities highlighted that a review of the accident scene and the involved Toyota Premio indicated that the front part remained intact and the airbags didn’t deploy due to the impact being on the car’s roof.
Investigations are ongoing into claims that four unknown individuals had followed Kiptum days before the accident.
Survivor Sharon Kosgey is expected to assist the police in reconstructing the events leading up to the tragic accident involving Kiptum and his coach.
