The opening half offered few attacking opportunities, with neither side registering a shot during the first 30 minutes. The contest was largely dominated by physical battles, as Argentina and England combined for 19 fouls before the halftime whistle without producing a shot on target.
England eventually broke the deadlock in the 55th minute when Anthony Gordon finished a cross from Morgan Rogers with a well-taken volley.
After taking the lead, England focused on protecting its advantage, allowing Argentina to dominate possession and push forward in search of an equaliser. The pressure paid off late in the game as Fernández levelled the score before Martínez completed the comeback moments later.
The victory sends Argentina into Sunday’s World Cup final, where it will face Spain as it seeks to retain the title.
England’s wait for another World Cup final appearance continues, having last reached and won the tournament in 1966.

Following the defeat, England manager Thomas Tuchel said he had no regrets about his team’s approach, praising the players for their effort.
He said the team delivered one of its strongest performances of the tournament and came close to securing a place in the final but ultimately fell short.
