Osotsi: ODM Must Field Its Own Presidential Candidate in 2027

Vihiga Senator Godfrey Osotsi has called on the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) to present its own presidential candidate in the 2027 general election, rejecting proposals that the party should instead back President William Ruto.

Speaking on the future of ODM after the death of its longtime leader Raila Odinga, Osotsi said the party remains strong and well-equipped with leaders capable of contesting for the presidency.

He recalled a past meeting of ODM MPs along Mombasa Road where Raila Odinga challenged claims that the party would not field a candidate.

“Baba asked us, ‘Who said ODM will support someone else? Who said ODM will not have a candidate in 2027?’” Osotsi said, adding that the party must now uphold that position following Odinga’s passing.

Osotsi dismissed assertions that ODM lacks a credible successor, naming himself, Siaya Governor James Orengo and Embakasi East MP Babu Owino as potential contenders for the top seat.

He also referenced the 10-point agreement signed between Raila Odinga and President William Ruto when the broad-based government was formed, arguing that key issues such as electoral justice and police accountability must be fully implemented.

The senator called for compensation for families of young protesters killed by police and the prosecution of officers found responsible.

He further insisted that the full truth about the last general election must be revealed, stressing that transparency is non-negotiable.

Addressing ODM party leader Oburu Oginga, Osotsi urged the current leadership to adopt Raila Odinga’s inclusive and consultative approach. He cautioned that sidelining grassroots members could weaken the party.

“We have no issue with our leader Oburu Oginga, but he must listen to the people,” Osotsi said, noting that Raila would always consult widely during times of disagreement. “Ignoring members’ views risks tearing the party apart.”

Osotsi also underscored the importance of unity between the Luhya and Luo communities, saying their collaboration is crucial to ODM’s strength as the next election approaches.
