MoH Reports Mpox-Related Death and 3 New Cases After a Month Without New Infections

The Ministry of Health (MoH) has confirmed a death linked to Mpox in Kenya, alongside the recovery of 13 patients from the virus.

The fatality was reported on Friday, as the ministry also announced three new cases in Mombasa, Nairobi, and Nakuru, bringing the total number of Mpox infections in the country to 17.

“The National Public Health Laboratory has confirmed three new cases in Mombasa, Nakuru, and Nairobi counties,” the MoH stated, marking the end of a month with no new reported infections.

These new cases are part of ongoing management, with Mpox confirmed in 17 individuals across 11 counties, including Nakuru, Kajiado, and Bungoma.

Health Cabinet Secretary Deborah Barasa reiterated the Ministry’s commitment to protecting public health and addressing the virus’s spread.

“We thank the public for their continued adherence to health protocols and their active participation in efforts to combat Mpox. These collaborative actions have been crucial in slowing the spread of the virus and safeguarding communities,” she said.

To further contain the virus, the Ministry is monitoring 83 contacts, with 78 having completed the mandatory 21-day follow-up.

“Three of these contacts have tested positive for Mpox, while two remain under active observation,” the statement added.

As the country continues its fight against the outbreak, Barasa urged citizens to stay vigilant, practice enhanced hygiene, limit contact, and reduce the number of sexual partners to help prevent further transmission.
