What killed Obwaka? Postmortem Findings Finally Out

Job Obwaka died from cardiac arrest, a postmortem conducted on Tuesday has confirmed.

The examination, witnessed by his family at Lee Funeral Home, was carried out by three pathologists representing the government, the family, and the defence. All were in agreement that the cause of death was linked to an underlying heart condition that led to a fatal cardiac event.

Family pathologist Joseph Ndung’u stated that the process was thorough and that all parties concurred on the findings. The family has expressed satisfaction with the preliminary report, even as they await further results from toxicology tests expected in the coming weeks.

Obwaka’s brother, William Obwaka, said the family is confident in the findings and will now focus on burial preparations and honoring his memory.

Meanwhile, the defence team criticised investigators, accusing them of unnecessary publicity and calling for the probe against their client to be dropped once toxicology results are finalized.

Investigators have submitted samples from key organs for further analysis. Items recovered from the scene—including utensils, medication, and a partially consumed bottle of wine—are also undergoing testing.

Police reports indicate that Obwaka had shared a meal before retiring to his room, where he later collapsed. He had earlier met a woman in Kitengela before being rushed to Nairobi Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

His burial is scheduled for May 15 in Mumias, Kakamega County.
