In the lush green highlands of Nandi County, a new generation of young farmers is reshaping the future of agriculture by turning farming into a profitable and modern enterprise rather than a last-resort survival activity.
One of the standout examples is Modern Farmer Abel, who began his farming journey in 2022 and has since grown it into both a business venture and a youth empowerment movement.

Through his initiative, he trains fellow young people on modern agricultural practices, including greenhouse farming, irrigation systems, organic farming, and crop diversification.
His mission, he says, is to challenge long-held perceptions about agriculture.
“My mission was simple: to prove that farming is not a punishment for the poor, but a profitable career for educated young people,” he has emphasized through his work with youth groups across the region.
Across Nandi County, more young people under 30 are increasingly turning to agribusiness, driven by unemployment and rising economic pressures. With support from local mentors and county agricultural programmes, many youths are venturing into poultry farming, dairy production, avocado farming, and vegetable cultivation.
Some of them started small—owning only a few chickens or working on tiny plots of land—but have gradually expanded into thriving agribusiness enterprises through training, innovation, and persistence.
The momentum was further highlighted during a farmers’ field day on organic farming held on May 15th, which attracted over 500 farmers from across the North Rift region.

The event also brought together more than 30 companies showcasing both local and international agricultural technologies and solutions.

The training session focused on sustainable farming methods, knowledge sharing, and exposing farmers to modern tools and innovations aimed at boosting productivity and profitability.

As interest in agribusiness continues to grow, Nandi’s young farmers are emerging as a powerful example of how agriculture can be rebranded into a modern, income-generating sector capable of transforming rural economies and creating employment opportunities for the youth.
