Residents in Mwiki, Nairobi, have taken to the streets in protest following the horrific rape and murder of an 18-year-old woman, sparking outrage and clashes with police.

The victim, Abigael Winner Wanjiku, was found dead in her family home on the night of June 19. She had been raped, stabbed multiple times, and severely mutilated. Police reports indicate she suffered five stab wounds to her abdomen, deep neck and ear cuts, and a fractured skull.
Her body was discovered naked and lying in a pool of blood.
Authorities recovered a knife believed to be the murder weapon, along with a cooking pan used to bludgeon her. The identity of her attackers remains unknown, and investigators have yet to determine the motive.
Abigael’s mother, who runs a small kiosk nearby, said her daughter had visited her to deliver food before returning home. When she came back around 11 p.m., she found her daughter’s lifeless body.
The brutal killing ignited fury among residents, who on Friday blocked the Mwiki-Kasarani road with stones and debris, demanding swift justice. The protests turned chaotic as police used live ammunition to disperse the crowd.
One protester, Joshua Nderitu, was shot and critically injured and is currently receiving medical care.
No arrests have been made so far.
Abigael’s murder adds to a troubling surge in violent crimes against women in Kenya. Authorities have formed a special task force to investigate the growing trend, but experts caution that addressing the underlying issues will be a complex and long-term challenge.
