The champions of the 2024 Africa Cup of Nations are set to receive a historic prize of seven million dollars (approximately Sh. 1.2 billion), as revealed in a statement by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) on Thursday.
This amount marks a 40 percent increase from the winnings of the previous edition, where Senegal took home the trophy in Cameroon two years ago.
The runners-up in Ivory Coast, the hosts of the premier African football tournament scheduled from January 13 to February 11, are slated to receive four million dollars. Teams eliminated in the semi-finals will be awarded $2.5 million each, while quarter-finalists will receive 1.3 million each, as outlined in the statement, which did not provide additional details on prize money distribution.
The host nation, Ivory Coast, along with 23 other countries, including the record seven-time champions Egypt, will compete for glory in the West African nation.
The tournament kicks off with two-time champions Ivory Coast facing Guinea-Bissau, who have yet to secure a win in their three previous appearances, on January 13 at the 60,000-seater Alassane Ouattara Stadium in Abidjan.
