Moses Kuria: I advised Ruto to integrate the Opposition into government

Former Public Service Cabinet Secretary Moses Kuria now asserts that he recommended to President William Ruto the inclusion of Opposition leaders in his government.

Kuria explained that his suggestion was based on his assessment of potential problems if the Opposition was not involved.

Although he is no longer in government, Kuria expressed satisfaction that the President followed his advice, emphasizing that it was crucial for the country.

“For clarity, the idea of inviting the Opposition into government was largely mine, even before Gen Z. I anticipated possible issues ahead and discussed with the President the need for political reform and thinking outside the box to overcome these challenges,” Kuria stated on Citizen TV.

He added that regardless of his current position, he is proud of the President’s decision, believing it to be in the nation’s best interest.

When asked if he still communicates with President Ruto after the Cabinet reshuffle, Kuria confirmed, “We talk frequently.”

Kuria also mentioned his efforts to persuade Opposition party members of the benefits of joining the government.

Following the dismissal of his entire Cabinet, President Ruto appointed at least five new Cabinet Secretaries from the Opposition, particularly from the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), to create a more inclusive government.

Ruto’s goal, as stated, is to unite the country. During the swearing-in ceremony last week, he remarked that this broad-based cabinet aims to unlock Kenya’s full potential.

“The formation of this broad-based government, which includes former political rivals, is designed to unleash the country’s potential, previously hindered by factional and sectarian divisions. While political competition is beneficial, there are times when national interests outweigh those of individual political groups. This is why I have reached out to incorporate the knowledge, expertise, and experience of deserving Kenyans from different political backgrounds,” Ruto said.
