President William Ruto has officially handed over the management of Amboseli National Park to the Kajiado County Government, marking a historic milestone in the devolution of natural resource management.
The handover follows years of negotiations between the national and county governments over revenue sharing and community involvement in conservation efforts.

Speaking during the ceremony, President Ruto said the move demonstrates his government’s commitment to empowering counties and ensuring that local communities directly benefit from resources within their regions.
“This transition is more than an administrative change — it’s about placing the people of Kajiado at the heart of Amboseli’s conservation and development,” Ruto stated.
Under the new arrangement, Amboseli — one of Kenya’s most popular tourist destinations and home to the largest elephant population in the country — will be jointly managed by the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) and the Kajiado County Government to enhance wildlife protection and tourism income.
Kajiado Governor Joseph ole Lenku hailed the decision as “historic justice” for local communities who have long coexisted with wildlife without reaping equivalent benefits.
“This handover confirms that conservation and community welfare must progress together,” Lenku said.
