Ruth Nyambura Mbagara, the mother of the 19-year-old teenager depicted in a widely circulated video engaging in physical altercation with a traffic police officer, has publicly addressed the incident, shedding light on her son’s arrest and expressing regret for his actions while also offering a defense.
Ms. Mbagara recounted that the confrontation arose as her son, Ian Njoroge, hurried home to return her car and escort his siblings to church, a responsibility he typically fulfills as the eldest son.
She admitted Njoroge’s error in making an illegal U-turn but asserted that the situation escalated when the officer demanded a bribe of Ksh.10,000, an amount beyond the means of the university student.
Njoroge offered to gather Ksh.5,000 from friends, but the officer refused, exacerbating the tension and resulting in the recorded altercation.
Expressing shock, Ms. Mbagara disclosed her discovery of police presence at her residence that evening and witnessed her son being physically restrained by officers. She acknowledged her son’s wrongdoing in assaulting the officer but refuted claims circulating in certain media outlets portraying Njoroge in a more severe light.
Reflecting on the ordeal, Ms. Mbagara conveyed her distress upon returning from a business trip to find law enforcement vehicles outside her home and witnessing her son being restrained.
She refuted allegations of attempted murder and robbery levied against her son, emphasizing her pain at seeing him portrayed negatively.
She offered a sincere apology for her son’s actions, emphasizing that violence was not justified and had already been addressed with him.
