Siaya Governor James Orengo addresses the ODM's youth convention in Mombasa on November 14, 2025.

Orengo: Ruto Needs ODM, it is Not ODM that Need Ruto

Siaya Governor James Orengo has criticised a faction within the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) for aligning themselves with President William Ruto’s administration under the broad-based government deal, calling the move an act of political cowardice.

Addressing ODM youth during a convention in Mombasa on Friday, Orengo argued that it is President Ruto — not ODM — who is desperate for political support ahead of the 2027 elections, saying the Head of State has failed to meet Kenyans’ expectations.

He stressed that ODM must remain independent and continue representing the interests of ordinary citizens.

“We want a government that is accountable. And as things stand, Ruto needs ODM — not the other way around,” Orengo said. “Some people in this party are behaving as though ODM is dependent on Ruto. It’s Ruto who needs ODM because he has failed.”

He praised interim party leader Oburu Oginga for affirming that ODM will not be swallowed by the broad-based arrangement.

Orengo went on to affirm that ODM has the capacity to field its own presidential candidate in 2027, insisting the broad-based agreement is not legally binding.

“The liberation movements in Africa died because they abandoned the people. ODM is a party of the people, and it cannot be reduced to a broad-based outfit,” he said.

He warned that supporting Ruto’s re-election would leave ODM politically stranded.

“I don’t know why this party is turning into a party of cowards,” Orengo said. “Some members are already claiming ODM will be in government or form the next government. In politics, you must be decisive. A strong party like ODM must know exactly what it stands for.”

He echoed the late Raila Odinga’s message of unity and youth inclusion, emphasising the scale of Raila’s legacy.

“What Raila leaves behind is greater than what all Kenya’s four past presidents have achieved — Kenyatta, Moi, Kibaki, Uhuru — and even Ruto,” Orengo said.

“Raila was smart; he didn’t leave us just to join the broad-based government. He wanted ODM to remain the voice of the people, and that’s why the party leads the opposition forces in Parliament.”

The youth convention kicks off ODM’s 20th-anniversary celebrations scheduled for Saturday, November 15, as members pay tribute to Raila’s legacy and outline the party’s direction going forward.
