ODM Grassroots Elections Set for Wednesday

The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) grassroots elections are scheduled to take place this Wednesday at polling stations across all 47 counties.

In a press statement, Emily Awita, the chairperson of the ODM National Elections Coordinating Committee (NECC), confirmed that preparations are complete and measures are in place to ensure the smooth conduct of the highly anticipated elections, which will see new office bearers elected.

Aspirants have been registering online, via a USSD code (*483*036#), and through a web portal to sign up for participation in the elections. Awita emphasized that a participation fee of Ksh. 100 is required for all candidates to be eligible.

“Only registered members will be allowed to vote or stand for election, and copies of the voter register will be available in all 47 counties by the end of business on Tuesday, November 26, in preparation for the polls,” said Awita.

The statement further noted that County Elections Coordinators have been trained and equipped with the necessary tools and skills to ensure the elections proceed efficiently.

Awita called on all party members and aspirants to avoid any actions that could disrupt the elections, urging them to exercise patience and restraint. “The polls will run from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm. We anticipate a smooth process, and I urge all participants to stay focused and avoid unnecessary disruptions,” she said.

The elections will involve the selection of 30 party officials, with 10 positions each for the mainstream, women’s league, and youth league categories.

The mainstream elections will include positions such as Chairperson, Vice Chairperson, Secretary, Organizing Secretary, Treasurer, Women’s Leader, Youth Leader, and three Committee Members. The women’s and youth league elections will feature the roles of Chairperson, Secretary, Organizing Secretary and their deputies, Treasurer, and three Committee Members.

ODM operates with four levels of delegates: polling station, ward, branch (constituency), and county levels. The dates for elections at the other levels will be announced following the polling station elections.

The party had postponed the grassroots elections in April due to severe weather conditions that affected various parts of the country.
