ODM Gears Up for 20th Anniversary Celebrations in Grand Mombasa Event

Mombasa will be the center of political attention from tomorrow as the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) kicks off a three-day celebration to mark 20 years since its formation.

The festivities, running from November 14 to 16 at the iconic Mama Ngina Waterfront, will celebrate the party’s legacy while paying tribute to its late founder and long-time leader, Raila Odinga.

President William Ruto and former Tourism Cabinet Secretary Najib Balala — both founding members of the movement — are expected to attend the celebrations. However, retired President Uhuru Kenyatta, who was also invited, will not be present, according to his spokesperson Kanze Dena.

The milestone event is expected to draw a mix of party stalwarts, loyal supporters, and emerging leaders in what insiders describe as a defining moment for Kenya’s most enduring political party.

This will be ODM’s first major public event since Raila Odinga’s passing on October 15, an occasion that organizers say will blend celebration with reflection. Ruto’s attendance is being interpreted as a symbolic gesture of goodwill toward the opposition party, even as it navigates its post-Raila era.

Former ODM luminaries like Uhuru and Balala were expected to join the current leadership in revisiting the party’s journey, its struggles for democracy, and its role in shaping Kenya’s political landscape.

According to ODM officials, the 20th anniversary will spotlight the movement’s contributions to political reforms, devolution, and the protection of civil liberties, while also laying the groundwork for the 2027 elections.

Acting party leader Oburu Odinga described the occasion as a time to honor Raila’s remarkable contribution to Kenya’s democracy.

“We celebrate this landmark in recognition of the enduring legacy of our departed leader, Rt. Hon. Raila Amolo Odinga — whose vision, courage, and sacrifice gave birth to this movement,” Oburu said.

ODM Executive Director Oduor Ong’wen said Raila’s death had transformed the tone of the anniversary, turning it from a jubilant festival into a solemn reflection on his life and legacy.

“Initially, this was meant to be a grand celebration. But following his passing, it has taken a new direction — it’s now more about mourning him while celebrating his immense contribution to Kenya,” he said.

In the run-up to the event, the party has been mobilising supporters nationwide to travel to Mombasa by SGR, encouraging them to take the Thursday morning train for a show of unity.

“Let’s SGR together! Book your ticket now so we can travel together to celebrate Baba in Mombasa,” ODM urged in a statement.

The programme begins on Friday, November 14, with an ODM Disability League Breakfast from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m., followed by women and youth summits from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. The day will conclude with a youth concert running until midnight.

On Saturday, November 15, celebrations at Mama Ngina Waterfront will center on Raila’s vision, achievements, and political legacy, running from 7:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. The event will also feature a recommitment ceremony by members to uphold democratic ideals championed by ODM over the past two decades.

That evening, a Founders’ Dinner will be held at Sarova Whitesands Beach Resort, while an inter-religious thanksgiving service has been planned to honor Raila’s life and the party’s historic journey.
