Hundreds of passengers found themselves stranded for over four hours at the Mbita ferry terminal in Homa Bay County on Tuesday evening due to a malfunctioning ramp. The passengers were en route to Luanda K’Otieno in Siaya County from the Mbita mainland when the ramp of the Mbita Ferry Services experienced a malfunction, trapping passengers on board.
The ferry, which also carried at least 13 cars destined for Siaya County, faced complications as one of the chains controlling the ramp broke while passengers were still boarding.
Bernard Siro, the manager of Mbita Ferry Services, explained that the incident occurred during the boarding process at the terminal, prompting a delay in the journey to address the issue. Recognizing the potential risk to passengers, they opted to postpone the trip until a solution could be found. Siro highlighted the necessity of repairing the faulty ramp before allowing the ferry to proceed to Luanda Kotieno.
In response to the situation, Mbita Ferry Services had to employ two alternative vessels to transport the stranded passengers while the malfunctioning ramp underwent repairs. Fortunately, there were no reports of injuries or fatalities resulting from the incident.
