The partially completed structure gave way, burying an undetermined number of people beneath the debris, including construction workers and residents in the vicinity.
Itierio is located roughly 15 kilometers from Kisii Town, along the Kisii-Migori Highway near Suneka Market.
Emergency responders from the police and Kisii County Government have been deployed to the site and are actively carrying out rescue operations.
Those pulled from the wreckage have been rushed to various medical facilities in Suneka and Kisii Town as efforts intensify to save lives.
An incident report indicates that the collapsed structure also damaged nearby homes and businesses around Itierio Mixed Primary School in Suneka.

“Kisii County emergency teams are on-site in Itierio, Suneka, where a multi-storey building has collapsed, trapping several individuals. The surrounding businesses have also suffered, with some reports of looting,” the report noted.
The Kisii County Government is expected to release an official update later today, April 6, with further details.
This tragedy follows closely on the heels of a similar scare in Mombasa, where residents of an 11-storey building were evacuated three days earlier after structural cracks were found.
That building, located near Coast General Hospital, showed signs of imminent collapse, especially after prolonged heavy rains in the region.
The evacuation in Mombasa was led by county officials and national security personnel under the direction of Coast Regional Commander Ali Nuno.
Mombasa County Fire and Disaster Chief Officer Ibrahim Basafar stated that the building’s basement had already sunk, prompting immediate evacuation.
“The evacuation took place at night. Although still under construction, the building was already occupied,” Basafar said.
“One of the floors and the basement had already given in. The structure is visibly leaning, and it’s evident that it wasn’t constructed to proper standards,” he added.
