Wanjigi’s Bold 2027 Promise: No SHA, No VAT, No Debt Payments

Safina Party leader and 2027 presidential aspirant Jimi Wanjigi has unveiled an ambitious policy agenda that includes scrapping the Social Health Authority (SHA), eliminating Value Added Tax (VAT), and introducing free education from primary school through Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions.

Addressing residents during a town hall meeting in Mombasa on Monday evening, Wanjigi also declared that his administration would refuse to service what he termed as illegitimate public debt, arguing that some of the loans were acquired outside lawful government procedures.

The businessman-turned-politician claimed that certain debts were neither approved through the national budget nor properly channelled through official government institutions, and therefore should not be repaid by Kenyan taxpayers.

On healthcare, Wanjigi pledged to abolish the current SHA and SHIF systems, replacing them with a universal healthcare model that would allow Kenyans to access treatment using only their national identification cards. He said citizens would no longer be required to make contributions in order to receive medical services.

His remarks come amid ongoing discussions surrounding the implementation of the Social Health Insurance Fund (SHIF) and broader reforms in the healthcare sector.

Wanjigi also proposed a major overhaul of Kenya’s tax system, promising to do away with VAT and replace it with a single five per cent sales tax. According to him, the move would lower fuel prices, reduce the cost of living and make goods and services more affordable for ordinary citizens.

In the education sector, he pledged to make learning free from primary school to TVET level, arguing that the government already has adequate resources to finance the programme without requiring additional contributions from parents.

As the 2027 General Election approaches, Wanjigi has intensified his public engagements across the country, presenting himself as an alternative to the current political establishment. His campaign message centres on lowering the cost of living, improving access to public services and reforming government borrowing and taxation policies.
